Germany 2010

Germany vacation April 1st through 23rd 2010. The trip was extended by the icelandic volcano by a few days. We went to Oldenburg, Bad Zwischenahn, Hamburg, Laboe, Kiel, Lübeck, Munich, Walsrode, Bremerhaven and Groningen in the Netherlands.

Maintenance Building The maintenance building was built by the prisoners themselves in 1937-38. It served the needs of the prisoners camp and contained a kitchen, clothing supply room, baths, laundry and workshops. In the so-called Schubraum (literally "shunting room") in the west wing of the building, the degrading registration process began for the newly arrived prisoners. On the roof of the building a text was painted in large letters: "There is a path to freedom. Its milestones are: Obedience, Honesty, Cleanliness, Sobriety, Hard Work, Discipline, Sacrifice, Trhuthfulness, Love of thy Fatherland."

May the example of those who were exterminated here between 1933 - 1945 because they resisted Nazism help to unite the living for the defence of peace and freedom and in respect for their fellow men.

Perimeter fence (partly reconstructed in 1965) The in 1937-38 newly erected prison camp was surrounded by a perimeter fence designed to make escape impossible. SS men kept watch over the camp from seven watchtowers. The instant a prisoner entered the prohibited zone he was fired upon. Some prisoners ran into the border strip on purpose in order to put an end to their suffering.
