German Submarines

Pictures of submarines of the German Kriegsmarine of 1935 to 1945 on display. U 505 is in Chicago, U 995 is located in Laboe near Kiel and U 2540 in Bremerhaven. More information about these and another boat in the article German Submarines.

Air cleaning system

The CO2 enrichment in submerged operations can be measured with the Dräger device onboard. The air cleaning system starts when the CO2 content exceeds 1.5 %. The air cleaner contains calcareous granules which bind the carbon dioxide in the air. One air filter filling is sufficient for about 4 to 5 hours of air purifying. To refill the air cleaner (2 canisters) the filling of 4 potash canisters is necessary. 450 potasch canisters are onboard as replacement.

The calculation is based on the following data: The air volume inside the hull is 900 m³. The crew consists of 60 men. The carbon dioxide output per man and hour amounts to 10 litres during sleep, 20 liters during light, mostly seated activities, 30 litres during heavier activities. Further calculations are based on the average, i.e. 20 litres per hour and man for ordinary submerged operations.

Basis of the oxygen requirement is the CO2 requirement + 10 %.

Diesel engine room

Of the machine rooms of the boat, only the back portion of the electric engine room is in its original condition. The Diesel engine room used to house two 6 cylinder MAN diesels, which through the use of a Vulkan clutch and gear box each ran one of the both propellers.

With the conversion of the boat, this diesel-electric machine was put in:
2 12 cylinder MB 820 diesel engines with an output of 600 hp each at 1400 rpm
Make Daimler Benz
and
2 BBC generators with an output of 405 kW
Make BrownBoverie Cie.

This means that at the Federal Navy, the boat ran only using the electic engines. While diving at shallow depths, the diesel engine could be supplied with air using the so-called Snorkel, which, like the head of the periscope, reached above water.

Auxiliary Engine Room

The auxiliary engine room contains the two control stations for the engines of 2500 hp each. On the right side the main switchboard for the monitoring of the generators is situated. The control stations were developed in 1942/43. All switching actions could be done with only one large handwheel (drive range switch) via switch cams.

Next to the dome bulkhead on the right is a large number of instruments combined in a panel. These are required for the monitoring of the diesel engines.
