2008-05-20 14:15:30 ** Germany, Kalkriese ** Iron Mask of a Face Helmet

Found in Kalkriese - Oberesch 1990. The Kalkriese mask is currently the oldest known mask of a face helmet. It is made from iron and was covered with sheets of silver. Remains of this are still visible in the corners. Facial features are modeled in great detail, which gives the mask individual character. Face helmets are a pompous part of the equipment for riders and were worn at parades and jousts. It's possible it was also worn in battle.
