Dachau Palace

Dachau Palace is the first summer palace of the House of Wittelsbach. During the reigns of Duke Wilhelm IV (reigned 1508-1550) and Duke Albrecht V (reigned 1550-1579), it was transformed into a massive four-wing palace complex. In the south-west wing a banqueting hall was built with a magnificent wooden ceiling created by the Munich artist Hans Wisreutter und 1564 to 1566 which is one of the most important Renaissance ceilings in Germany. The palace remained largely unchanged until 1715, when Elector Max Emanuel commissioned his court architect Joseph Effner to rebuild the banqueting hall tract with a modernized facade and a new staircase. At the beginning of the 19th century, King Max Joseph I of Bavaria had three of the four palace wings pulled down. Only the banqueting hall tract redesigned by Effner in the baroque style remained.
