Holsten Gate

Most significant town gate of the late Middle Ages in Germany and trade-mark of the city. Constructed between 1464 and 1478 by the council's architect Hinrich Helmstede following the example of Flandric bridge gates. Formed middle gate in a complex of four town gates. Reconstructed between 1863 and 1871 and between 1933 and 1934. Houses the museum of minicipal history.

Inscription was put into place in 1871 during the restoration of the Holsten Gate. It was then thought that the gate was finished in 1477, but today it's known that it was not finished until 1478. 1871 was also the foundation of the German Empire. S.P.Q.L. stands for "Senatus populusque Lubecensis", so "Senate and People of Lübeck".
